Archeologia urbana a Matera. Dall’indagine stratigrafica alla condivisione dei dati: lo scavo di S. Giovanni Battista – S. Maria La Nova

In 2007, during urban regeneration interventions in Via San Biagio in Matera, the removal of the existing pavement has revealed the presence of archaeological remains. The opening of an urban archaeological excavation has discovered an extensive medieval cemetery that occupied the quarry of building material for the nearby church of Santa Maria La Nova (now St. Giovanni Battista). The uniqueness of an urban archaeological stratigraphy in Matera and its importance for the reconstruction of settlements in this part of the town in the Middle Ages, has justified the inclusion in a broader research program sponsored by thePost-graduate School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of Matera, University of Basilicata. The project intended to clarify, through the collection of archaeological data, the settlement dynamics of the urban centre between antiquity and post-medieval times.
