The Department of Architecture, Planning and Road Infrastructures, in collaboration with the Department of Engineering and Environment Physics of the University of Basilicate, carried out a research on the effectiveness of innovative precast concrete panels to reduce traffic noise. The investigation was carried out on the rural road Tito-Brienza, which is the by-pass between SS 407 Basentana and SS 598 Fondovalle Agri. The traffic noise under standard conditions was firstly measured and subsequently it was measured after putting in place the innovative acoustic panels. The results show that, in the areas of maximum exposure dozens of meters away from the edge of the Tito-Brienza bypass carriageway, the traffic noise reached 74.5dB(A) during the day and 66.4dB(A) at night. The analysis of the results obtained during the investigation showed that the use of the innovative 3.6 × 1.80 × 0.1 5m precast concrete panels reduced the traffic noise by about 15dB(A) through out the week.
