The evolution of industrial districts (IDs) can be considered as the result of changes in inter-firm relationships and in knowledge management processes. In this paper, a cognitive approach is proposed to investigate how inter-firm relationships are changing in IDs and how the characteristics of knowledge, involved in these networking processes, can affect these changes. Assuming the content of inter-firm relationships as transferred knowledge, the relations between the complexity of the transferred knowledge and the specific types of inter-firm relationships are examined. Then, analysing three possible stages of industrial district evolution, the relevance of the knowledge codification process and of the social interactions for the effectiveness and efficiency of coordination between firms is stressed.
