THE «ORDINARY CITY»: REFLECTIONS ON THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THE DEMAND FOR SERVICES IN AN URBAN CONTEXT. – Though the research on the role of services has widely developed in the last decades, the relationship between services and urban spaces is usually addressed focusing on the location patterns of service firms. This article, part of a work in progress, proposes a different perspective that, as a starting point, considers the city as a knot of service demand, firstly stemming by its built environment. In this perspective, it is argued that particular attention should be paid to facilities management services, that allow and sustain everyday life in our cities and form part of the urban experience. After a review of the recent literature on service spaces, Italian case study is introduced, with a specific reference to the main characters of the non-residential building stock and the recent evolution of the services for the built environment.
