An application of the seismic isolation technique to the retrofit of a R/C building designed with no seismic resistance is presented. The work deals with three main problems: seismic protection level which can be attained, detailing and construction procedure, cost analysis. As far as the protection level is concerned, the seismic response of the isolated structure has been compared with that of the fixed base structure, confirming the effectiveness of the retrofitting technique. A special concern has been given to the detailing, providing a solution of the typical technological problems which condition the feasibility of such intervention. The estimation of the costs and the comparison with the cost of a conventional retrofit has shown the economical convenience of seismic isolation.
