Abstract

Mt. Vulture volcanic aquifer, located on the northern border of the Basilicata region (southern Italy) and formed in an area of strong tectonic instability, is a complex hydrogeological system because of its structure and the variability of hydrogeochemical processes to it associated. Groundwater are destined to drinking water, agriculture and industry uses. Furthermore, the aquifer is characterized by precious mineral waters confirming the social and economic benefits. The analysis of geological, stratigraphic, hydrodynamic features and hydrochemical data contributed to characterize groundwater hydrogeochemical processes occurring within the studied basin. The research focused on the GIS-based approach and statistical analysis of the datasets, permitted the elaborations of hydrochemical maps identifying groundwater characteristics. The analysis data results evidence the determining role of the groundwater flow systems in different hydrogeological zones related to the spatial distribution of the groundwater physico-chemical patterns and the seasonal variations.
