In Basilicata region, there are numerous anthropic hypogea and, in recent years, only some of these have been studied. Historically, most of the hypogea were used for residential purposes and stables for livestock, while others were chosen as a refuge from religious. Currently, some hypogea are still used as a storage area for food or to run the processes of winemaking. The aim of the present paper is to highlight which of these hypogea are relevant in terms of geological features, historical characteristics and construction techniques. From a constructive point of view, the caves have an elementary structural conception; it essentially employs the arch effect, both for the parts dug inside the cavity and the parts in front built-in masonry. Currently, most of the hypogea are in a disrepair condition. For this reason, it is necessary to implement the study and the census of the anthropic hypogea, through a specific register, to ensure their geoconservation and valorisation.
