Agronomic, nematocidal and herbicidal effects of soil solarization on two melon and two tomato crops, were investigated in the period 1999-2001 in a plastic-greenhouse infested by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica in Southern Italy, Metaponto area (40°20’ N; 16°48’ E). Number of infested plants and root gall index were strongly reduced in solarized soil, more evidently when solarization treatment was repeated two or three consecutive years. Positive effects on weed emergence and crop yield were also observed compared to non solarized soil. Solarizing effect was reduced by the time, because of soil reinfestation by root-knot nematodes.

Effect of repeated applications of soil solarization in greenhouse in Southern Italy.
